Facts On Chiropractic

Chiropractic can be defined as a complimentary and alternative health care profession. Its purpose is to diagnose and treat mechanical disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system. Unlike many other fields of medicine, chiropractic does not only provide treatment that addresses symptoms. Rather, when it is done well, it detects the causes of pain and discomfort and provides the means by which they can be corrected.

Chiropractic is based on the ideology that spinal joint dysfunction can interfere with the nervous system and result in diminished health and discomfort. Although chiropractors offer a range of approaches and methods, almost all chiropractors focus on the rehabilitation of the spine. The close proximity between the spinal column and nervous system is what leads to the high frequency of back pain and the success of chiropractic. In fact, slight alterations in muscle or bone structure, which would have been considered as whimpers in other areas of the body, can be overbearing when it takes place in the spinal column.

A recent study showed that two out of every three people would experience back pain at one point or the other in their life. This overwhelming high occurrence is one of the reasons why chiropractic is such a prominent field in healthcare. And, while back problems are the most frequently reported health problem treated, chiropractic physicians also treat a very wide range of health problems.

Chiropractic can be summarized as the art, science and philosophy that take into account the relationship between the joints and nerves and utilize this relationship to determine ttreatment for the various problems that may arise due to this relationship. As in most fields of medicine, in chiropractic there can be more than one way to treat a patient’s problem. This at most times is determined by the doctor as well as the patient and the treatment is usually what both the doctor and the patient are most comfortable with.

Chiropractic treatments often include spinal adjustments. When the joints in the spine become misaligned or subluxated, even by the slightest of margins, normal joint motion is affected. This leads to irritation within the joint itself. If not treated rapidly or correctly, this may lead to arthritis. More importantly when these joints become misaligned, they irritate the nerves in that area, and this leads to tremendous amounts of pain as well as inflammation, tingling and numbness.

A chiropractor’s job is more difficult than one might think. The simple fact of the matter is a chiropractic physician is expected to know and fully understand why a person who is complaining about a shoulder or back pain at the same time is suffering from pain in apparently unrelated part of the body, Chiropractic physicians understand that the nerves are the signaling tool of the body and, when they are interrupted by misaligned joints, wrong signals get sent throughout the body and a tremendous amount of discomfort can be experienced.

Typically, chiropractic physicians are well trained and well respected, and often provide patients with excellent health care.
